Frequently Asked Questions
How to Choose the Right ECE
Choose a centre that aligns with your family’s values, offers qualified staff with low ratios, and feels welcoming during an in-person visit. Start by reviewing centre philosophies (such as play-based or Reggio Emilia-inspired approaches), checking official ERO review reports, and scheduling guided tours to observe how teachers interact with children during daily routines.
Focus your questions on teacher qualifications, staff turnover, room ratios, daily routines, and safety practices. Key questions to ask include:
What are your teacher-to-child ratios in my child’s room?
How many of your kaiako (teachers) are fully qualified and registered?
What is your approach to settling-in visits and primary caregiving?
How do you communicate daily updates and learning progress with parents?
What meals, resources, or supplies are provided versus what parents must bring?
ECE centres offer structured, purpose-built group environments with qualified teachers, whereas home-based care provides smaller in-home settings, and playcentres are parent-led cooperatives. ECE centres like Heart of Albany provide rich social opportunities, multi-age indoor/outdoor play spaces, and structured school-readiness pathways under the guidance of professional early childhood educators.
Look for licensed centres that meet Ministry of Education standards, maintain strong child protection policies, and foster warm, responsive relationships. You can verify quality by checking the centre’s latest Education Review Office (ERO) report, observing clean and secure indoor/outdoor facilities, and watching whether teachers actively engage, comfort, and listen to the tamariki.
Start researching and visiting centres 3 to 6 months before your target start date, or even earlier for under-2 nursery spaces. Visiting early gives you ample time to compare options, complete settling visits comfortably, and secure a place on a waitlist if your preferred days are filled.
Costs, Funding & Subsidies
Childcare fees vary depending on your child’s age, session lengths, and attendance schedule. We offer flexible options, including full days, short days, and half-day sessions, paid fortnightly in advance via automatic payment. Please contact our centre office directly to receive our current, detailed fee schedule and Terms of Trade.
20 Hours ECE is available for all 3 to 6-year-olds and directly reduces your weekly fees by fully subsidising up to 6 hours per day and 20 hours per week. To receive this government subsidy, parents simply complete an Attestation Form allocating their child’s 20-hour entitlement to Heart of Albany. Standard hourly rates apply for any additional enrolled hours beyond the subsidized limits.
Yes, eligible families can receive the Work and Income (WINZ) Childcare Subsidy to help cover their attendance costs. Eligibility depends on your household income and weekly activity level. Our administration team can assist you with filling out the required service-provider sections of your WINZ application paperwork.
Yes, standard fees apply for public holidays and sick days, but families are entitled to a 50% discount for up to 4 weeks of planned holidays per year. Any optional charges (such as non-standard excursions) or registration deposits will be fully detailed in your enrolment agreement prior to start.
Enrolment & Getting Started
Children can start ECE at any age from early infancy through to 5 years old, as the right time depends on your family’s routine, work needs, and child’s readiness. Many parents choose to enrol infants as early as 3 months to support working schedules and early social development, while others wait until toddlerhood or age 3 when 20 Hours ECE funding begins. Regardless of when your child starts, our tailored environments and flexible settling processes ensure a smooth transition that supports their unique developmental stage.
You can inquire by submitting a form on our website or calling our office, after which we will invite you for a guided tour of the centre. Visiting allows you to meet our kaiako (teachers), explore our learning environments, ask questions, and see our daily routines in action before deciding to enrol.
Enrolment requires submitting a completed Enrolment Form alongside your child’s official birth certificate (or passport) and current immunization records. Once the paperwork is verified and space is confirmed, we will set your child’s official start date and schedule settling visits.
If a space is not immediately available for your preferred days or age group, your child is placed on our waitlist free of charge. We allocate spaces as they become available based on the date of application, age group room availability, and required session patterns.
Settling visits are complimentary transition sessions hosted prior to your child’s start date to help them feel safe and familiar with the centre. Parents attend these visits alongside their child to meet room teachers, establish routines, and ensure a comfortable, gradual transition into care.
Curriculum & Learning
Our educational programme is guided by Te Whāriki, New Zealand’s national early childhood curriculum, alongside Reggio Emilia-inspired emergent learning. We weave Te Whāriki’s five core strands—Wellbeing (Mana Atua), Belonging (Mana Whenua), Contribution (Mana Tangata), Communication (Mana Reo), and Exploration (Mana Aotūroa)—into child-led daily activities.
The Education Review Office regularly evaluates our centre to ensure we meet government quality, governance, and educational standards. Official ERO reports review our learning environment, teacher-to-child ratios, governance policies, and child development outcomes, and are made publicly accessible to parents.
ECE builds essential foundational social, emotional, and cognitive skills during the most critical developmental years of a child’s life. Participating in quality early learning fosters self-confidence, communication, and independence, preparing tamariki for a smooth transition to primary school.
Daily Life at the Centre
Heart of Albany is open Monday through Friday during standard business hours (7:30 am to 6:00 pm), operating 52 weeks a year. We are closed on statutory public holidays, though regular fees continue to apply on those days.
Yes, our on-site chef prepares nutritious daily meals (morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea) aligned with Healthy Heart guidelines. We cater to all recorded allergies, intolerances, and cultural dietary preferences. Parents only need to supply formula or breast milk for infants.
Pack a full change of weather-appropriate clothes, necessary nappies (if applicable), a seasonal hat, and any comfort items for rest time. Please label all belongings clearly with your child’s name to prevent mix-ups.
Children exhibiting contagious symptoms (such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea) must stay home and be clear of symptoms for at least 48 hours before returning. This strict exclusion period protects the health and safety of all children, families, and staff members at the centre.
Support & Feedback
We provide tailored, inclusive support by creating individual plans and collaborating directly with whānau and external specialists. When necessary, we work with Ministry of Education Learning Support services to ensure your child receives the appropriate resources and care.
You can share feedback directly with your child’s room head or the Centre Manager via email, phone, or in person. We maintain an open-door policy and follow formal, structured steps to listen to, investigate, and resolve any parental concerns promptly.
